Jute is the most used natural fibre next to cotton and has extensive benefits; it is affordable, eco-friendly and flexible. Jute is produced from plants widely grown in India called the orchorus olitorius and Corchorus capsularis. I lived in India and have not only used jute but also noticed it being put to a wide variety of uses such as for making ropes, jute bags, jute mats, jute rugs and eventually I discovered its useful purpose in making yoga mats. Being a fitness addict, a eco-friendly product is the first requirement on my list and there is no other mat that is this close to being as natural as a jute yoga mat.

Why to Choose Hugger Mugger Sattva Jute Mat ?

Jute is made from jute grass. Jute grass being made from the most natural source of fibre is biodegradable which makes it prone to damage when it is bought in contact with the elements of earth like water or under the sun. To increase the durability of these Hugger Mugger Sattva Jute Mat, they are made of a combination of jute and PER (polymer environmental resin) which is free of harmful chemicals and phthalates. Hence the top of the mat is made of jute and the bottom layer is made from PER. Additionally jute has a rough texture, so to avoid the burning sensation and scratches while changing poses, it is best to have a combination mat like this one. This blend allows us to enjoy high quality durable mat without compromising on its eco-friendly feature.

Those who want to feel close to nature while practicing yoga,Hugger Mugger Sattva Jute Mat is the same thing as stepping on natural jute grass. Additionally it is latex-free which makes it a safe choice for anybody with allergies.

The lightweight of this mat makes it convenient to carry anywhere whether simply to a yoga class or travelling long distance.

Unlike other jute products, this mat is antimicrobial and resistant to mildew.

Jute adds natural beauty to a yoga mat with its natural tan shade.

Unlike most other mats, this mat does not smell of chemical or rubber.

Some people complain about the grip on this mat but I find the grip on this mat great however it is not as good as the rubber mats. The bottom part being made of PER is perfect for providing grip against any kind of slippery floor and the top jute part has sufficient texture to allow you to hold and transition to another pose.

Why Hugger Mugger Sattva Jute Mat is not recommended for everyone?

Jute mats are not very smooth, they have greater texture than most other mats made of foam. Hence they require a break in period, so the more that it will be used the comfortable it will get.

It is not machine washable as the sticky backing of the mat will lose its stickiness. However, it is easy to clean it by simply wiping down the surface with a cloth or a mat cleaning spray followed by a cloth.

This mat is comparatively thinner than most rubber and foam made mats, if you like to feel grounded to the earth then you will like this jute mat. If you prefer a thick mat to cushion your joints and knees then Hugger Mugger Sattva Jute Mat is definitely not the one for you because it is just average on thickness at 3mm.

The mat is not long enough to fit someone with more than average height.

What matters more comfort or nature?

If staying connected to the nature is your number priority then this mat is for you. They are also other alternatives to eco-friendly mats out there such as the yoloha yoga mat made of original cork but they are more expensive starting at $100.This Hugger Mugger Sattva Jute Mat, has it all when it comes to price, versatility, durability, eco-friendly, stickiness and average thickness. However if comfort and padding is your first priority then it is a better idea to instead consider other foam and rubber mats.

I hope my jute yoga mat review on Hugger Mugger Sattva Jute Mat provided you insights about jute yoga mat that will help you make the best choice for yourself. 1. Even though my friend is looking for a mat that is close to nature, I am not sure this is the perfect one. I think she needs something with more padding and also more comfortable. In any case, I will share this post with her because despite the cons, there are more on the positive side for this Hugger Muggger Sattva Jute mat.

    1. Hello Carol
If your friend is only looking for mats made of jute are not too thick that is how the jute fabric is. But like you mentioned she prefers something close to nature, so the next would be rubber yoga mats, then she has more preferences when it comes to thickness, like Manduka yoga mat offers wide range of mats with all levels of thickness, check my review out https://yogawithraman.com/manduka-yoga-mat-reviews-the-texture-only-gets-better-with-more-usage. I hope this helps 🙂
